I Corinthians 13 for Homeschool Moms

Though I teach my children how to multiply, divide, and diagram a sentence, but fail to show them LOVE, I have taught them nothing!

And though I take them on numerous field trips, to swim practice and flute lessons; and though I involve them in every church activity,

but fail to give them LOVE, I profit nothing!

And though I scrub my house relentlessly, run countless errands, and serve three nutritious meals every day but fail to be an example of LOVE, I have done nothing!

LOVE is patient with misspelled words and is kind to young interrupters.

LOVE does not envy the high SAT scores of other Homeschool families. LOVE does not claim to have better teaching methods than anyone else,

is not rude to the fourth telephone caller during a science lesson, does not seek perfectly behaved geniuses, does not turn into a drill sergeant, thinks no evil about friends’ educational choices!

LOVE bears all my children’s challenges, believes all my children are God’s precious gifts, hopes all my children establish permanent relationships with Christ, and endures all things to demonstrate God’s love!

LOVE never fails!

Where there are college degrees, they will fail;

where there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

For we know in part and we teach in part. But when the trials of life come to our children, the history, math, and science will be done away and faith, hope, and love will remain;

I'm sure God is speaking to each one of us with His unique rendition of this for our life and situation, but the underlying theme remains . . . more important than all of the homeschooling and housewife responsibilities is the living out of the love of Christ in our home and toward our children.

Red Tide on Florida Shores

We arrived home safely! The boys enjoyed Florida. We went to Disney World for three days and stayed at the Shades of Green Resort. The boys enjoyed the rides and the pool.

The rest of the week was spent on Daytona Beach Shores. The weather was beautiful! The only bad thing is they had a "red tide" come in. I had never heard of this. The condo accountant said that this usually comes in on the gulf side.

The red tide can cause flu like symptoms for humans. So by the time we left on Saturday every member of my family except my oldest son was coughing and having trouble breathing. The 12 hour car ride home was less than fun! My youngest son, lost is breakfast an hour into the drive. Needless to say the van still doesn't smell the same.

Has anyone ever had any symptoms from a red tide? If so how long did they last?

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn, arrived in early October excited about their opportunities when they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve.

They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19, a terrible tempest- a driving rainstorm- hit the area and lasted for two days. On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high. The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way, he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. By this time, it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"

The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials EBG were crocheted into it. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria.

The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria. When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and she never saw her husband or her home again.

The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth, but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home; that was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews and stare. The pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving. The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike.

He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how heforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between.The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door. He saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine. Dear Mean Mommy,

I am writing, once again, to protest your visit to our house yesterday. I would have thought that my last litany of complaints would have given you pause before you returned, but no. You seem to come and go at will. Well, I have had enough.

First, you never give me any warning that you are coming. If I knew you were coming, I would be able to prepare for you as I do all my other guests. Why must you always arrive when the house is in such disrepair? In general, we do a fair job of keeping things picked up, but without fail, when the house is at its messiest, you show up. Not only that, but you time your arrivals when I feel my worst. Your last visit was after a sleepless night with our newborn. Before that, it was during a stressful time when the bills were late. No one should feel free to visit at tax time, especially when I have put off important record-keeping until the last minute. I suppose you would not think twice of arriving at our door immediately after we have just had back-to-back company. These are not the times to make unannounced appearances at our house!

Even if we were aware of when you were coming, I would still not appreciate your attitude. Must you whisper those words to me all day long? You can’t do this. You are failing. Another woman would do a better job than you. What are you doing to your children? It isn’t enough that you pick on me, but must you also be so grumpy toward my children? All day long, you nag and complain about them. Do this. Do that. Hurry up. Get back to your work. You are a broken record and you need to be replaced! Don’t you realize that children are not finished products, yet? They are adults-in-training, but they’re not there yet. And must you be so impatient with them? Sometimes, you are like a steamroller, plowing through the house. I would hate to get in your way! You are running us all over.

But the worst of it is your appearance…you look so much like me, my children may not realize the difference between us. They might actually think that you are me! I have had to apologize repeatedly for your troublesome ways.

This is it. Your reign of terror must stop. Please leave and never return.

And should you be tempted to come back, just remember that I am onto your tricks. Your wiles will not fool me any longer. I am going to fight to keep you away. And I know the best way to do that, too.

First, I have determined in everything, to give thanks seeing that this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning me. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) I will rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4) for I am learning, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Philippians 4:11, 13) When those doubts begin to creep in I will be confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in me will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)

If you could just stop blustering and ordering everyone around long enough you might see an eternal perspective. You would realize that there is so much more to life in Christ than the day-in-and-day-out ups and downs. Step back for a moment from the immediate stressors. Why, there isn’t a hair that falls from my head that the Father is unaware of. He cares for birds and flowers in the field. How much more does He care for me and my family? (Matthew 6:25ff) Not only that, but He is working every circumstance in my life for my good and for the good of my children who love Him. (Romans 8:28)

Since I know that I must be sober, to love my husband, to love my children (Titus 2:4), I will be gentle among my little flock, even as a nursing mother cherishes her children: So being affectionately desirous of them, I will be willing to have imparted unto them, not the gospel of God only, but also my own soul, because they are dear unto me…even when I must labor night and day. (1 Thessalonians 2:7-9a) And most of all I will remember that charity—an antiquated term for our word love—suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity—or love—never faileth. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)

If I have to, I will get really radical. When you show up, I intend to meet you at the door intent on bodily harm. For I see who you really are. You are the old (wo)man that Scripture speaks of so clearly. But I know this, that my old woman is crucified with Christ, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth I should not serve sin. (Romans 6:6) I will likewise reckon myself to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So I will let not sin therefore reign in my mortal body, that I should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield my members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield myself unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and my members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (Romans 6:11-13) Because I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

In recent conversations with friends I have found myself dwelling on others faults instead of my own. Knowing well this is wrong. The Lord reminded me this evening of my arrogance and my need to be humble and seek him. I was also reminded that I have not arrived; I am in the process.

It's Snowing!!!!!

For the first time in a long time, we are getting a lot of snow! They are predicting anywhere from 4 -12 inches! This is huge for Kentucky. Our boys are so excited! The snow storm did come at an inconvenient time. Its production time for both of the boys plays; one is tonight and the other tomorrow afternoon! So, we packed our bags, made a hotel reservation, and left our house which is about 30 miles west of the location for the play at 6:00am this morning before the snow started.

My husband and younger two boys stayed home this morning (Friday) to keep the fire going! They stocked the wood pile on the covered back porch, filled up our kerosene tank, stocked up on food, and rented movies. So they are prepared for whatever comes. The sleds, winter outer-coverings, and hot chocolate mix are out waiting for the right time. So, for now we are just praying for safety while traveling on these roads and enjoying all of this white stuff.

Financial Goals for 2008

This post is in response to the Financial Goals for 2008 call by http://www.moneysavingmom.com/

Our 2008 Financial Goals:

1. 1000.00 Emergency Fund (Finished)

2. To create a realistic budget. (Finished)

3. To track spending for an entire month. (We are writing each item down that we spend money on and will evaluate at the end of March)

4. Invest 8% of Tim's Income into his employers 401-K. His employer matches this with an additional 4%. (Finished/Ongoing/ we started this, we feel like with the difference in taxes and because we are already thirty we couldn't wait any longer)

5. To stay on our budget through the end of 2008 and re-evaluate changes at that time.

NEXT YEAR GOALS: will include prepaying our vehicle, student loans and then the house. (I know this isn't what Dave Ramsey suggests, however we feel like this is our best option with the difference in taxes and because our house and student loan debt is below 5.5% interest.)

Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year again, that I seem to dread. I actually love organizing and cleaning the house thoroughly each Spring and Fall, however it's finding the time that is required to complete the enormous task that haunts me.

I try to keep an updated cleaning journal of what needs to be done in each room weekly, monthly, and Fall/Spring cleanings. This helps me not to feel completely overwhelmed! I know what needs to be done, yet it still seems so hard to complete everything each year.

One room at a time is my method, which is probably not the most efficient way to go. I like feeling like the task is complete with a check in the box. I've looked at various cleaning schedules looking for that "perfect" one. Most seem to concentrate on one task at a time, such as cleaning all of the house windows & screens at one specific time.

By the way, don't be fooled into thinking my house is perfect. It is in NO way perfect. I seem to go from hectic to very clean, however I would love to just be in the middle. I do try and finish my Spring Cleaning list, because I have a family of four boys and live on a farm. During the winter months we use the fireplace/stove and this creates such a mess! The dust seems to collect so much faster and thicker. It seems like we track more in too. We have hardwood floors which helps, but they show everything!

2008 Drama Camp

This week, March 3rd-8th, begins our 2008 Homeschool Drama Camp. As we gather last minute preparations for the upcoming camp; we are praying that the Lord will be with this ministry and with each child who is participating in the camp. There is so much that goes into this and we are very thankful to all of the volunteers and drama staff with the Academy of Arts that make this happen each year for our students.

As a homeschooling mother, drama camp is a week of hustling around to accomplish all that must be done while traveling to and fro to practice. I am certainly thankful that this only occurs once a year!

Our eldest son, Dylan is in the "older" play for middle-high school ages. This year Dylan is casted as Man 2 in the play, "April Morning" by Jim Potter. This is his first year in the older play, so he is quite excited with his part. Shane, the second oldest, is in the "younger" play for elementary aged children. This year's play is titled, "Family Camp," by Wendy Rivera. Shane will play one of the children without a speaking part. He loves being in the plays, however he doesn't like the parts with lines! He does love singing and participating with all of the other children.

Wheat Prices on the Rise

My father farms in Arkansas and my father-in-law farms in Utah. Wheat crops have been horrible this year. Therefore, flour and wheat is expected to triple by May. My father-in-law called today and advised us to stock up within the next few weeks before the wheat goes on the market and jumps. We are planning on stocking up on up to a year's worth of flour and whole wheat as our budget allows. Do you regularly find good deals on flour? I haven’t yet found any so we have been buying our flour from Sam’s club in the 25lb. sacks. -Victoria

"While I'm not one to jump on "the-sky-is-falling" hyped-up bandwagons, I have heard from multiple reputable sources that wheat prices will be increasing substantially very soon. This price increase will likely have a strong trickle-down effect since so many things one normally buys at the store contain wheat.Our family bakes from scratch most of the time and eats a lot of whole grains, so our diet contains quite a bit of wheat in it and we go through a lot of flour. Because of this, I've been determining a course of action to take so that our grocery bill doesn't take a beating.1) Stock up on as much wheat and flour as can in the next few weeks - My mom just ordered a few 50-lb bags of organic wheat kernels and we'll be buying some of that when it comes in. Some other friends of ours have a huge supply of organic wheat so we'll likely buy some from them when we run out of what we have on hand, if prices are still high.2) Experiment with grinding flour out of other grains - Since I have a grain mill, I'm thinking now would be the time to try my hand at grinding other types of grains--grains which might be less expensive than wheat. Ice Storm

Today was one of those days you just want to stay inside next to the fire with a good book! We were hit with a small ice storm this afternoon. However, it turned out to be one of the most relaxing days I've had in months! My husband got to come home early. So, the boys played board games with him. I did some much needed baking. It's been almost a month since I've baked bread or any sweets. The store bread is just not the same. I had forgotten how bland it is. There is nothing like the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven. mmmm!

As an added bonus, we finally got to make our Valentine cupcakes. It's only a week late. The kids didn't mind, they enjoyed mixing their icing with different food coloring to get different colors.

Getting Back to Normal

With all of the recent events in our family we are slowly getting back to a normal routine. It's amazing how things can get so far behind so quickly!

I don't know about you, but I am dreaming of Spring coming SOON! I can't wait to be outdoors more. There are so many things that are wondrful about spring. We open up all of our windows for as long as possible, the house smells so fresh because of this. It's also a time of spring cleaning, which in it's own way is peaceful. The site of the curtains and bedspreads hanging on the outside clothesline is one of my favorites. I know its simple. But the simple things in life are the ones I treasure the most!

WALMART: They have a few good sale racks with 50% & up in the clothing sections. I found several polo type Wrangler short sleeve shirts for $3.00 each.

This past week has been the hardest week in years for our family. After Shanes accident he had surgery the following Saturday (2/2). The surgery went well and he is recovering wonderfully. However, after we got home from Louisville my mother called to tell me to come back to Louisville to the hospital my grandfather was in. By the time I got there it was too late, he had passed away.

He had a high-risk biopsy done on Friday and was recovering in ICU. My mother, who is a CCU Registered Nurse, was staying with him at the hospital. She had just helped the attending nurse move my grandfather up in his bed, when his heart quit. By the time the Cath lab got there he was gone.

The Lord was gracious and took him quickly. After he passed my mother and her sister were by his bedside and the TV came on by itself playing a song titled: "Nearer My God to Thee." It was so comforting for my mom.

Again, I wanted to thank everyone who prayed for our family. We felt your love and support throughout.

Prayers requested for our son, Shane

Our son, Shane, fell out of our barn hayloft. This is about a ten-foot drop. He suffered facial wounds from the fall. We spent last night (Wednesday) in the Children’s Hospital ER. He was admitted around 2:00 a.m. (Thursday). After CT's, x-rays, and evaluations from surgeons it was determined that he has three nasal fractures and one lower orbital fracture. He was placed on the OR schedule for morning for nasal repair surgery.

He was such a trooper! They stuck him three times to put in the IV and draw blood, he never flinched! Then, the facial surgeon pulled what he thought was a wood chip (splinter) out of his nose only to realize it was a piece of his upper nasal bone! It had traveled pretty far and cut his nose. He then stitched his nose and upper lip. Mom was the only one crying! Around four in the morning they had to draw blood again, however this time they stuck him in the arm, hands, and finally the feet where they were able to get enough blood. Again, he never flinched! He slept through this last blood drawing session. The nurses were amazed!

This morning the facial surgeon and his senior surgeon came into access him. They decided to watch the nose fractures and let them heal naturally since they seemed to be aligned correctly. We have to follow-up on Monday with them.We were discharged around noon from the hospital and headed to the eye surgeon. He saw two different surgeons, which evaluated his orbital fracture and eyes. They are having a specialist in tomorrow from Indianapolis who specializes in this type of fracture. So we have to return tomorrow for another evaluation. These two seem to think he needs the fracture repaired and are worried that his eye muscles or tissues might be entrapped in the fracture. So, potentially they think he will need the fracture repaired and the eye muscle/tissue repaired.

FRIDAY UPDATES:
Shane is scheduled for surgery Saturday morning to repair his orbital fracture. They will move the eye up and “un-entrap” the muscle/tissues. Then they will repair the fracture. It will be an outpatient surgery, so hopefully everything will go smoothly. Please continue to keep Shane in your prayers!

I'm Jennifer, wife to Tim and mother to four precious boys: Dylan, Shane, Jesse, and Wyatt. We live in rural Central Kentucky on a small 25 acre farm. Our animals include: two Great Pyrenees Dogs- Mandy & Jake, three horses- Magic (actually my mothers horse, shes a Curly Mustang), Blaze, and Carey, five cats, and about 15 chickens. We would love to add a Dexter cow in the upcoming years for milk. However, right now we have our hands full with the animals we have.

We have been homeschooling for six years. We use different approaches for each of our children. We love the Classical method for educating Dylan. He loves to read and is a self-teacher. We use the Veritas Press books for him. Our second son, Shane, has Tourettes Syndrom and Sensory Integration Disorder. We have found that the Bob Jones DVD Program works best for him. Jesse will begin K next year and we will probably use a mixture. This is the beauty in homeschooling!

I'm currently learning about homesteading. We have just started making our homeade bread with our Bosch Mixer & Nutrilmill. Our goals for the upcoming year are getting a whole house water purification system and expanding our garden & canning in 2008!
